Abstract Backgrounds. Cut Out Shapes. Adding And Subtracting. All vector layer content must converted to outlined curves with no line width. These imported into Xcode without any issues.
Using groups will however allow you to have multiple child layers for each symbol rather than flattening them all into one layer. You may prefer this approach for flexibility. Underneath the parent Symbols layer, you will find the Guides and Notes layers.
You should generally leave the layers in Guides alone, as they will help you ensure that your new design has correct optical alignment when neighboured with text.
There are two layers named left-margin and right-margin which allow you to define leading and trailing margins—you can select the Move Tool V and drag the left or right nodes on the bounding box to change the horizontal scaling of these. To keep things simple, we recommend creating your new symbol design without repositioning the two margins, then only rescaling them horizontally if you require more padding between the symbol and text either side.

I knew that I wanted exactly 12 petals in my overall design, so 30 degrees was the perfect amount to fill the shape as intended when using the Power Duplicate feature. Symbols can be incredibly useful when creating repeat patterns because any changes you make to an object will be reflected across all other instances of that object in your design.
For example, I created a simple ice lolly design that I then wanted to repeat across the whole canvas. Using a combination of Symbols and Power Duplicate seemed a perfect choice.
To create the initial Symbol from which to build the pattern I selected the ice lolly design and then clicked Create in the Symbols Studio with Sync turned on. Once I filled the page it was easy to adjust the colour, angle and size of the ice lollies without having to select each one individually.
This cushion mock-up was also made using Symbols. After creating a simple design using random shapes, I then turned it into a Symbol and used it as the basis for a much larger pattern.
When making this kind of pattern the Distribution options found in the top right corner of your toolbar are essential to making sure everything is evenly placed, as when an element is spaced even slightly incorrectly, it will really stand out when your pattern is scaled to the correct size. For more information on creating repeat patterns for textiles check out our article by Liz Kohler Brown.
You can also use Symbols to create intricate illustrations with repeat elements. So, to make life even easier I made the window sections vector symbols. This meant that I could make changes to the colour, height, width and gaps between the windows all in a matter of seconds! These are just a few examples where Symbols can be utilised to great effect.
Many ex-Adobe users switched over the Sketch as it gained popularity in recent years. However, this is a Mac-only program that is not available for Windows. Affinity Designer was originally only available for Mac, however, the Windows version has now been available for a few years. As a result, Affinity quickly became a recognized competitor for Photoshop users. Affinity also has some other programs available, like Photo and Publisher.
At the top, you have the main toolbar and along the left-hand side, you have the toolbox. These let you switch between vector design and pixel design within the same interface. You can build projects that support both vector and pixel graphics in the same file. Most of this interface should be fairly intuitive.
The Affinity team also has a collection of free tutorials recorded and posted to Vimeo. I would highly recommend studying this entire series to learn the basics from scratch. This hardcover page book of Affinity tips comes straight from the team at Serif with step-by-step guides for every feature.
This book truly is the complete guide to Affinity Designer for beginners. It will answer all your questions and set you on the path to go about creating your own work from scratch. To learn more check out the book page. If you have any questions about it you can reach out to the Affinity staff directly.
But version 1. These symbols are like repeat objects that can be duplicated across the page, but updated in one location to change every element.
This means if you create buttons or headers in the mockup you can change colors or font styles once to update everything. Other features include custom grids and even resizable features to design mockups for responsive layouts. There are also some alternative features available that can be used for simple and complex projects to do all the things simply and efficiently.
Affinity relies on the same tools for vector design as every other major program, including Adobe Illustrator. But you also have the pen tool which carries over from Adobe programs like Photoshop and Illustrator. For example, icon design is useful for everything from graphic design to web design and motion graphics.
Great intro tuts can teach you how to make a flat castle icon and how to create neat retro icons. But you can go so much further with vector work. Consider this tutorial for a scrolling vector background design. First, I recommend figuring out exactly what you want to do. Are you more of a print designer? Logo designer? Pick one area and then follow a couple of tutorials on that subject. Each tutorial is completely free and easy to follow.
Where should you go for support? Where can to find answers to your questions and help you solve problems along the way? My first and biggest recommendation is the Affinity support forum. There are already thousands of threads solving many common problems with new questions posted every day. You may consider collaborating with other graphic designers who are using this software as well.
But there are two other communities you can try for Affinity help. But the GD Exchange community is large enough to help if you post very specific questions.
